Phase 2 were introduced to a new set of maths apparatus this week called Numicon that we are using throughout the school from now on. To begin with, the children were asked to explore the shapes and organise them into groups. There was no set criteria and we had some very interesting ideas.

Some children grouped them into colours. Others sorted them into large and small numbers, with some arranging them into odd and even groups of numbers. One boy looked at the shape of the Numicon pieces and discovered that he could group them into squares, rectangles and irregular hexagons!

Next the children were challenged to arrange the Numicon pieces in the order that they thought they should be arranged. Again we had some great ideas.

Finally we looked at how we could record our results in our books. We all really enjoyed exploring the Numicon shapes and we are looking forward to using them again to help us with our maths learning.
